El fenómeno del doppelgänger aparece en la mitología y el folclore de diversas culturas. Es una palabra de origen alemán que significa literalmente “doble andante”. En la tradición germana, ver a tu doppelgänger se considera un presagio de muerte. Desde esta perspectiva, tu doppelgänger no es tu gemelo malvado o “evil twin”, tal y como a veces se traduce el concepto. El doppelgänger es una señal de mal augurio pero no necesariamente malvado.
Aunque el caso de Émilie Sagée es conocido porque se dice que tenía un doppelgänger, estrictamente este tampoco era un doppelganger ni un gemelo malvado, sino una especie de doble fantasma.
Émilie Sagée empezó a trabajar en 1845 en el internado de Neuwelcke en la actual Letonia, que en aquella época era Livonia, como nueva profesora de francés. El internado acogía a 42 alumnas, la mayoría procedentes de familias de la aristocracia livona.
Una de estas alumnas era la baronesa Julie de Güldenstubbe, según ella en aquella época una adolescente de unos 13 años (en realidad, según su fecha de nacimiento debía de tener unos 17 o 18). La baronesa será quien años más tarde sacará a la luz la extraña historia de Émilie.
La historia de Émilie Sagée
Émilie tenía 32 años, era natural de Francia, y Julie la describe como una mujer alta, rubia, un poco tímida y de carácter alegre.
Al poco de llegar la profesora Émilie al internado, empezaron a correr rumores de que algunas alumnas la habían visto en dos lugares a la vez. Por ejemplo, mientras una decía que acababa de ver a Emilie en los jardines, otra decía haberla visto en la biblioteca. Otras afirmaban haber visto a la profesora y a su doble en el mismo lugar. Era como si la imagen de Émilie se hubiese desdoblado y a su lado hubiese un doble fantasmal que imitaba todo lo que ella hacía. Por ejemplo, una alumna llamada Antoinette de Wrangel, afirmó haber visto a la profesora desdoblada mientras se arreglaba el vestido.
El primer desdoblamiento de Émilie
Sin embargo, todo aquello solo eran rumores hasta que un día, cuando Émilie daba clase de francés a trece alumnas, las chicas vieron a dos profesoras idénticas escribiendo en la pizarra. La segunda silueta copiaba los movimientos de la profesora, moviendo de la misma forma el brazo en que llevaba la tiza, aunque con mucho más esfuerzo que la profesora real. Además, su doble no tenía tiza en la mano, solamente imitaba el movimiento.
Cuando las niñas gritaron aterrorizadas ante aquella visión, el doble de la profesora se esfumó en el aire.
El fenómeno fue perfectamente visible para todas las chicas a la vez. Todas afirmaron haber visto claramente aquella silueta desdoblada idéntica a la profesora.
El desdoblamiento más notable de Émilie
El desdoblamiento más notable de Émilie Sagée fue otro día en que las 42 alumnas del internado estaban en la misma sala dando clase con otra profesora. A través de las ventanas podían ver a Émilie paseando por el jardín y recogiendo flores. Mientras la otra profesora salió un momento del aula, todas las alumnas pudieron ver a la doble de Émilie sentada en la silla del profesor, dentro de la clase.
A la vez, la verdadera Émilie seguía en el jardín, pero sus movimientos ahora eran mucho más lentos y pesados, como si estuviese a punto de perder la consciencia.
Dos de las niñas más atrevidas se acercaron con precaución a la silla donde estaba la doble de Emilie y la tocaron. Según describieron, la figura ofrecía poca resistencia al tacto, como si estuviesen tocando una tela de muselina.
Ante aquel contacto, la doble de Émilie desapareció de la silla, y la Émilie real que estaba en el jardín siguió recogiendo flores de forma normal, como si hubiese vuelto a recuperar toda su energía.
Durante los 18 meses que Émilie trabajó en el internado, se repitieron este tipo de episodios de forma periódica. No solo las alumnas habían asistido a estos extraños fenómenos. Algunas profesoras y personal del internado empezaron a ver también a la doble de Émilie.
Por ejemplo, cuando Émilie estaba comiendo, su doble aparecía sentada junto a ella imitando los movimientos de llevarse la cuchara a la boca. Al igual que en el episodio de la pizarra, la diferencia era que el doble no tenía una cuchara en la mano, solo copiaba el movimiento.
Como es natural, las niñas estaban aterrorizadas ante estos fenómenos. Al escuchar lo que estaba pasando, los padres empezaron a sacar a sus hijas del internado. Por eso, después de un año y medio, la dirección de la escuela no tuvo más remedio que despedir a Émilie Sagée.
Cuando Émilie comunicó su despido a sus alumnas, les explicó que ya iban diecinueve veces que la despedían en toda su carrera como profesora, y que siempre era por el mismo problema.
Después de dejar el internado, Émilie vivió durante un tiempo en las proximidades, en casa de una cuñada suya que tenía varios niños pequeños. Parece ser que los niños, de unos tres o cuatro años, también habían visto al doppelganger de su tía. Cuando una vez Julie fue a visitar a su profesora, los niños le dijeron que tenían dos tías Émilie.
Curiosamente, Émilie nunca llegó a ver a su propio doble. Solo sabía de su existencia porque los demás se lo decían.

Ya de adulta, la baronesa le relató el extraño caso de Émilie y su doble al escritor escocés Robert Dale Owen, que estaba buscando documentación para un libro sobre sucesos paranormales. Julie le dio permiso para publicar el relato utilizando los datos y nombres reales de todos los implicados.
El relato de Robert Owen según la baronesa Gülderstrubbe
En 1860 Owen incluyó el enigmático caso de Émilie Sagée y su doble fantasma en el libro Footfalls on the Boundaries of Another World (Pisadas en la frontera de otro mundo), junto con otros testimonios de personas que habían vivido experiencias sobrenaturales.
En 1883 aparece la misma historia de Émilie Sagée y su doppelgänger en la publicación británica de parapsicología “Light”, una revista de investigación psíquica, oculta y mística, creada por la alianza espiritualista de Londres. El artículo se presentaba como el texto completo del testimonio de la baronesa del que Robert Owen había sacado su historia. Pero el artículo, que no iba firmado, era exactamente igual que la historia que habia publicado Owen años antes.
Light tenía mucho peso dentro de los círculos de la parapsicología de la época, por lo que este artículo dio gran visibilidad al caso de Emilie Sagée dentro de este círculo. Muchos investigadores psíquicos recogieron y compartieron su caso.
El ruso Alexander Aksakov, un investigador de fenómenos paranormales muy destacado en la época, compartió este texto identificándolo como una transcripción directa del testimonio de la baronesa.
Las investigaciones de Camille Flammarion
Camille Flammarion, uno de los fundadores de la sociedad astronómica francesa, también se interesó por este caso. Pero encontró una partida de nacimiento en el registro civil de Dijon de una niña llamada Octavie Saget, nacida el 3 de enero de 1813. Aquello fue lo más aproximado que pudo encontrar al nombre de Émilie Sagée.
Camille Flammarion supuso que Octavie Saget y Émilie Sagée podrían haber sido la misma persona con un nombre diferente por diversas razones. Quizás la baronesa no recordaba bien el nombre de su antigua profesora. O quizás la propia Émilie Sagée había cambiado su nombre debido a los problemas de los dieciocho despidos que tenía a sus espaldas.
Si esto fuese así, esta partida de nacimiento sería la única prueba documental de la existencia de Emilie Sagee, aparte de los testimonios de la baronesa. Pero esto solo probaría que la profesora francesa existió, no que tenía un doppelganger. Resulta un poco extraño que no exista ningún testimonio de otras alumnas del internado aparte del de la baronesa, ni tampoco de los otros dieciocho trabajos que tuvo Émilie Sagée.
¿Existió el internado de Neuwelcke en Letonia?
Por otro lado, la existencia del internado de Neuwelcke sí está documentada, al menos históricamente.
En su relato, Robert Owen da una ubicación muy precisa. Dice que se encuentra a treinta y seis millas de Riga y a una milla y media del pueblo de Wolmar, hoy en día el pueblo de Valmiera, y que en 1860 cuando escribió la historia todavía estaba en funcionamiento.
En el sitio web sobre la historia de Letonia llamado Catálogo de los Círculos históricos de Letonia aparece la mención a la mansión Veļķu (Veļķu muiža en letón), que está situada en el pueblo de Valmiera y que parece que hoy en día sigue en pie.
En esta misma web sobre la historia de Letonia también hay una pintura al óleo del siglo 19 representando un colegio de niñas llamado Jaunveļķu en este mismo lugar.
Neuwelcke, como llamaba la baronesa al internado, es la forma alemana de la palabra Jaunveļķu en letón. Neu significa “nuevo” en alemán, igual que Jaun en letón. “Jaunveļķu” podría ser una extensión o una parte de la mansión Veļķu, llamada “Nuevo Veļķu”, que era donde se ubicaba el colegio. Por lo tanto, esta información coincide con lo que la baronesa le contó a Owen sobre el internado.
En la web sobre Letiona aparecen las coordenadas exactas del colegio Jaunveļķu. Pero al buscar en Google Maps, hoy en día en esta ubicación solo hay un campo sin edificar. Por lo tanto, la localización exacta y el estado actual del edificio no están muy claros.
Y hasta aquí llega la investigación sobre la verdad detrás de la historia de Émilie Sagée. Como habéis visto, todo depende de si nos creemos o no el testimonio de su antigua alumna la baronesa. ¿Decía la verdad o se lo inventó todo? Parece que, una vez más, nunca vamos a tener respuesta a este misterio.
